But while friends and family members can provide support and encouragement, you can also benefit from joining one of the many smoking cessation programs that have been created to help smokers kick the habit. A smoking cessation program can help you develop a better understanding of why you smoke and teach you ways of handling nicotine withdrawal and how to resist the urge to smoke.

Types of Smoking Cessation Programs

When choosing a smoking cessation program, first give some thought to the type of situation that will work best in terms of your schedule and location. Also consider the kind of environment in which youd feel most comfortable. For example, some programs help you quit smoking through face-to-face meetings; others use the telephone or Internet. A telephone or online support program may be particularly valuable for someone who has difficulty arranging transportation or child care to attend meetings. It can also be very helpful for someone who travels frequently, works long hours, or does shift work. Here is some information that will help you choose:

  • Telephone support to quit smoking. This type of program is available throughout the country. You can call the National Network of Tobacco Cessation Quitlines at 1-800-QUITNOW for assistance and referrals. Some support lines link callers with trained smoking cessation counselors, while others are primarily a referral source. The American Cancer Society also offers referrals to telephone counseling through its Quitline program; call 1-800-ACS-2345 to find a phone counseling program in your area. If you're using a smoking cessation aid, the manufacturer may offer free telephone support and counseling. Check the package insert that came with the product for more information.
  • Online programs to quit smoking. These may include information, exercises, a self-help guide, bulletin boards, online expert counseling, and interactive features such as chat rooms and a user forum. The interactive features can be particularly important, as they encourage mutual support and sharing of experiences. The online community can provide you with a virtual support system. What to Look for in a Support Group

While Nicotine Anonymous is a self-help support group led by members, most stop-smoking programs have formal leaders. Before joining such a group, ask about the leader's training and experience with smoking cessation programs.

Ask, too, about the program's success rate. How does the support group measure success? Don't be discouraged, though, if the success rate seems low. If the program helps you, then it's successful for you, and that's what counts.

Some programs are free or, like Nicotine Anonymous, pass a basket for donations to help defray expenses. Others charge a fee. Beware, though, if you are asked to pay a very high fee. And be wary of any Web site or program that encourages you to purchase a commercial product in order to quit smoking. Be skeptical of any claims that promise instant success.

Finding the Right Program for You

Your health care provider may be able to recommend a smoking cessation program in your area. Many hospitals and medical facilities offer programs. Check with your employer, too, to see if it provides referrals or if your employer-provided health insurance will cover the cost of a smoking cessation program. Other sources of information include public libraries, state and local health agencies, health fairs, the American Cancer Society, and American Lung Association.
