Amy Winehouse and emphysema: You don't always die from tobacco

Published Jun 26, 2008

Most likely, Amy Winehouse doesnt have emphysema. Yet. Her doctor probably said something like, If you dont stop smoking, that bad cough you have already will just get worse and lead to chronic bronchitis, emphysema and COPD. Not only will your singing career be over, but youll be dependent on supplemental oxygen and will have to lug around a tank of it wherever you go. Forever.

Want another cigarette? Just say, No, no, no.

Cigarette smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, accounting for approximately one of every five deaths (438,000 people) each year. Yet an estimated one of every five adults (21 percent) in America still smokes (some 45 million people). Whats worse, smoking harms nearly every organ of the body, causes many diseases and affects the health of smokers in general (not to mention the effects on others health through secondhand smoke exposure).

You dont always die from tobacco. And I dont mean that to be good news. Living with chronic lung disease or the aftermath of cancer surgery can be a living nightmare. Watch this one minute video clip and rejoin me down below:

No, you dont always die from tobacco. Sometimes you have to live with cancer, lung disease, heart disease, stroke, arterial disease, osteoporosis, reproductive problems and/or a host of other debilitating conditions. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, For every premature death caused each year by smoking, there are at least 20 smokers living with a serious smoking-related illness.

The double-barreled problem is that the adverse health effects of smoking are not seen immediately they usually take many years to develop, with many years living in blissful ignorance and that cigarettes are highly addictive, ensuring that their users will keep lighting up until, and even after, its too late. Cigarette smokers are physically addicted to nicotine and psychologically addicted to the process of smoking. Breaking the habit is therefore enormously difficult. But its the single best thing you can do to improve your health and the health of those around you. Quitting smoking has major and immediate health benefits for men and women of all ages. Former smokers live longer than people who keep smoking. Quitting smoking decreases the risk of lung cancer, other cancers, heart attack, stroke and chronic lung disease.

There are a lot of resources for people who want to stop smoking. For many people, nicotine replacement products offer an effective means to gradually reduce dependence without experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Many are available over-the-counter and come as patches, gums and lozenges. There are also prescription patches, nasal sprays, and inhalers as well as two non-nicotine medications called Zyban and Chantix. These products can help with breaking the physical component of cigarette addiction.

Most people also need help with the social and emotional ties they have to smoking, and its often helpful to enroll in some type of support program. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), Most states run some type of free telephone-based program, such as the [ACSs] Quitline tobacco cessation program that links callers with trained counselors. Smokers can get help finding a Quitline phone counseling program in their area by calling the ACS at 1-800-ACS-2345 (1-800-227-2345). Often your local American Cancer Society, American Lung Association or your local health department will sponsor quit smoking classes. A wide variety of resources is available on the CDC Web site.
