Create the Habits of Staying Lean and not Fat

This post originally appeared in Leo Babautas Zen Habits.

People want to lose weight really fast (myself included). We fantasize about having a flat stomach, a leaner body, in just weeks. Two weeks would be ideal.

Search for weight loss in Amazon and youll find books that will show you how to lose weight fast or in a certain number of weeks, like 8 weeks, 4 weeks, even 2 weeks.

Of course, thats bunk.

Lets take a closer look at what it would take to lose weight in 4 weeks:

  • About 2/3 of American adults are overweight or obese, and have more than 20 lbs. to lose. If youre trying to lose 20 lbs. in 4 weeks, thats 5 lbs. a week. But for most people, its much better to lose 1-2 lbs. per week than 3-5 lbs.
  • A big drop in weight (like 10 lbs. in the first two weeks) often happens if you drastically change your diet. Most of this is water weight only a few of those 10 lbs. will be actual fat. This water weight is deceiving, because 1) its unsustainable, because after the first couple weeks you wont lose much water weight and your rate of weight loss will drop to a more sustainable 1-2 lbs. per week, which will be disappointing if you hoped to keep losing weight that fast, and 2) the water weight comes back on really quickly if you change your diet back later.
  • What youre really doing is going on a short-term drastic diet (and probably some intense exercise) but in your mind, youre only doing it for 4 weeks, and you think you just need to get through this short-term suffering in order to achieve the weight loss. This is wrong. Youll lose weight, then go back to your old habits, and then gain the weight back and more.

So losing a lot of weight in 4 weeks is possible, but its more sustainable to lose it slowly, and to build long-term habits, and much of the weight you lose is water weight that will come right back on when you return to old habits.
And so, losing weight fast is a bad idea.
Whats a better way? Changing your actual eating and exercise habits, which is much harder than most people realize. Lets take a look at me as a case study.

Leos 7-Year Weight Loss Story

Calling it my weight loss story is deceiving, because this story really isnt about weight. Its about changing old habits.
I started off about 60 lbs. heavier than I am now, and I had years of bad eating and exercise habits. I ate lots of meat, junk food, sweets, fast food, party food, and drank soda, beer, fatty coffee drinks and more. And I almost never did active stuff. But thats just the start of my health habits, as it turns out.
Heres what happened:

  1. I started by quitting smoking. This taught me a lot about habits, and got the ball rolling down the road to becoming healthier.
  2. I started running to relieve stress. If you relieve stress by smoking, drinking, or eating unhealthy food, youll need to find a healthier stress coping habit. Running became that habit for me, though now I have others: meditation, socializing in a healthy way, drinking tea, and various thinking habits.
  3. I could barely run, and so I started small and progressed gradually.
  4. I learned that quitting smoking and running made me feel healthy and great, but eating junk food made me feel worse. So I started trying to eat healthier food, which meant learning to eat vegetables. I didnt like it much at first, but I learned to like veggies, and now I love them. This taught me that by gradually introducing healthy foods, I could train my tastebuds and learn to like things I didnt like at first. Ive now done this with dozens of foods.
  5. I became vegetarian. This cut out a ton of unhealthy fatty meats that I was eating, and I ate more vegetables instead. I missed the meats at first, but soon learned that I didnt need them anymore. I started losing a good amount of weight at this point maybe 30 lbs. in my first year.
  6. I ran a marathon. This took a year of building up my mileage. I was still overweight at this point, but definitely lighter.
  7. I started eating fewer sweets. This is a weak point for me, as I love sweets and still indulge now and then. Its been a long road of learning why I eat sweets, and eating other things instead (fruits, especially berries, and a little dark chocolate are my favorites also some raisins or dried cranberries).
  8. I learned to eat healthier snacks. Fruits and nuts, veggies and hummus, salads.
  9. I started to learn other ways to be active, like riding bikes, swimming, playing sports, lifting weights. One at a time.
  10. I learned that doing activities with others, like my wife, kids, sister, friends, was more fun and motivating. I learned about using challenges to keep myself motivated and to make active-ness more fun.
  11. I developed social coping skills so I could be a vegetarian in the midst of meat eaters and unhealthy friends/relatives.
  12. I learned to watch myself eating when I was eating socially. This is still something Im working on, as its not a habit you face every day.
  13. I learned to eat healthier at restaurants.
  14. In the 2nd year of fitness, I did a couple of short triathlons (I was just a beginner really). In my 3rd year I did a couple more marathons.
  15. I became vegan, gradually. Ive only been 100% vegan for about 5 months now, but was 95% vegan for a couple years.
  16. I learned to eat fewer processed grains, fewer convenience foods, less sugar.
  17. Last year I finally dropped sugar from my coffee.
  18. I started building a little muscle, slowly, in the last few years, through weights.
  19. I backtracked a bunch of times, overeating during travel or social occasions, gaining fat. Then Id set a little challenge for myself and lose fat again.

This is just the broad strokes overview, actually. Learning what habits Id developed over the years was the big part, and then slowly changing them one by one, has been the main process. Again, Ive backtracked a number of times, but watching myself do that has been a learning process, and learning to get back on track with healthy habits even after I slipped up has been a great skill to learn.
It hasnt been a linear progression. Ive gone up and down, learned a lot along the way, and am still changing my habits. Today I am happy with my body, and fairly lean for my age. I dont look like an underwear model, but I dont feel like I need to, and am really happy with my healthy habits. This is where I should be, and if I keep an eye on my habits, Im likely to stay this way for years.

So You Want to Form Lean Habits

Give up the idea of quick weight loss, and focus on building sustainable habits. Yes, it will take longer, but it will also last longer. Yes, it will take some work, but its fun, and you learn a lot about yourself in the process.

Heres what I recommend:

  • Start with a really easy habit. Just a small step, like drinking more water or eating a fruit a day or going for a short walk (or walk/run if thats too easy) or doing a few pushups. Youll learn about forming habits as you do so.
  • Stick with easy habits for awhile, and if youre successful at them, then you can gradually progress. Youll be amazed at how much you can progress I couldnt exercise for 10 minutes when I started, but in 2011 I completed the GoRuck Challenge, which was 13 hours of hard exercise.
  • Watch yourself as you eat. Why are you eating? What need are you fulfilling? Can you find a healthier replacement habit?
  • Change your tastebuds. Most people think things like, I cant give up meat or I hate vegetables or I could never give up ____ (cheese, sweets, chocolate, pizza, etc.). Im not asking you to give it up, but if you really want to learn the habits of being lean, change your tastebuds to healthier things. Eat a vegetable every day before long, youll like it. Try brown rice instead of white, or whole grains instead of white flour, or fruits instead of sweets, or tempeh instead of meat, or quinoa or kale or dark chocolate or chard. Theyre all delicious, if you give them a chance.
  • Make activity a social thing. Do something fun with other people. Join a running club. Walk with your spouse. Get your coworkers to join a challenge. Be accountable to each other.
  • Sign up for a race or other fitness challenge.
  • Learn to socialize without eating unhealthy things.
  • Learn healthy strategies for when you go to a social gathering or restaurant or travel.
  • When you fail, forgive yourself, and learn. Get better. Keep doing it.
  • Be proud of little progress. Enjoy the journey. I mean every single step dont keep your eye on the end goal, but on where you are, and how amazing it is.

That should get you started. If you do those things for a few years, youll know what else you need to do by then.
Good luck, my friends. This journey might be longer than a sprint, but thats what makes it worthwhile. If you set yourself down this path, you are one of the courageous, the joyous, the lucky.

14 Tips For Resolutions That Stick in the New Year

Statistics show that only about 15% of New Years Resolutions are kept. With an 85% failure rate, its no wonder that the amount of resolutions made is dropping. You wouldnt buy a product that is defective 85% of the time, so why buy into the annual hype about resolutions? A strategy that fails over four fifths of the time is broken. The question is, how do you fix it?

Most resolutions come in the form of habit changes. Quitting smoking, hitting the gym and staying organized are all based on routine habits. Ive spent the last few years changing habits. Training myself to become organized, exercise regularly, eat healthy, wake up early and work productively.

Resolutions Require Strategy, Not Willpower

I believe that most New Years Resolutions fail because people approach them incorrectly. Instead of developing a strategy for changing habits, most people try to rely on willpower. While willpower and motivation can get you through the first week or two, it cant last forever.

With the right strategy, however, you can make habit changes a success. There is no perfect formula, but after changing dozens of habits in myself over the last few years, I can offer a few suggestions:

  1. Create a Trigger. A trigger is a specific ritual you perform whenever you get a particular cue. This ritual focuses you on performing your habit, rather than sliding into old vices. Snapping your fingers when you feel the temptation to smoke; jumping out of bed at the sound of your alarm or repeating, do it now! to yourself are all triggers designed to kick your habit off. Practice your trigger and it will become automatic, overriding your default behaviors.
  2. Replace Lost Needs. Most habits fulfill a purpose of some kind, even if the side-effects are negative. You might watch television to relax, even if you have other things you would rather do. You might eat junk food to feel full, even if it isnt healthy. Consider what you are giving up in your habit change and make an effort to replace those lost needs.
  3. Write It in Ink. A commitment inside your head isnt a commitment at all. Keep a binder where you can store written commitments for habit changes. Not only will writing reinforce a promise to yourself, it will clarify your thinking as to what exactly you want to change.
  4. Commit for a Month. Resolve to stick to your change for at least thirty days. Less than this and you are likely to fall back into old habits. Three to four weeks is all it takes to condition a new habit.
  5. Keep a Journal. Open up a new word document and commit to writing a few sentences each day about your progress. Ive found this method helpful in reminding me about my commitment and helping me focus on the change I want to make.
  6. Increase Positive Feedback. If you reward a behavior, it will increase. Punish a behavior and it will be reduced. This feedback mechanism is common to all animals with a nervous system from sea slugs to human beings. If your new habit makes you feel worse than the old habits, it cant last.
  7. Strategic Enjoyment. One way to create more positive feedback is to structure your habit so it becomes more fun. Going to the gym isnt the only way to exercise if you hate it. Eating tofu isnt the only meal option for vegetarians. Look for ways you can make a new habit more enjoyable.
  8. Think Years, Not Months. A diet that consists of grapefruit and water isnt going to provide nutritional needs to last your whole life. Work on creating changes to your diet, work, exercise or routines that can be sustained for years. Crash diets and 18-hour workdays will eventually break.
  9. If You Slip Up, Start Over. I consider a habit change complete when I can go thirty consecutive days. If you slip up and break your habit on the 3rd, 15th, or 27th day, start over. This keeps you from cheating on days with the excuse that you will resume the day afterwards.
  10. Behavior First, Results Later. Dont let watching the scale or your bank account discourage you when trying to change a habit. The correct change in behavior has to come before any results start to appear. Focusing too much on losing weight, working less or being rich and throw off your attempts to form good habits.
  11. One Habit at a Time. Dont tackle several changes at once. Successfully conditioning one habit change is more useful than giving up on a half dozen changes after a month.
  12. Learn From Mistakes. This one is pretty obvious, but its surprising how many people when they fail to make a change, go back to using the exact same strategy. Figure out why you failed previously, and dont be too quick to blame willpower.
  13. Consistency Counts. A habit that is performed the same way, at the same time and under the same conditions every day for a month will be reinforced far more strongly than one that changes throughout the week. Be consistent and you can spend less time reinforcing a habit.
  14. Create a Habits List. When I started changing habits I created a list of all the changes I would like to make. Each month Id pick one change and focus on it until I could cross it off the list. This method can focus your enthusiasm so you dont take on too much or too little.

Second Hand Smoke Facts

World health organization studies showed that second hand smoke facts point directly to women. According to them, second hand smoke kills about 281,000 women each year. This is not so surprising because especially if their husband, father and siblings smoke all the time.

The world health organization is also concerned about  children especially those who are exposed to second hand smoke as they found more than 100,000 children under 5 years that had died because they are always exposed to secondhand smoking mostly in the regions like Arica and South East Asia.

Secondhand smoke causes extreme health problems including heart diseases, immediate adverse effects on your blood and blood vessels. Second hand smoke facts also discuss about the increasing risk of having a heart attack. According to them, about 46,000 heart disease deaths annually were recorded among adult nonsmokers in the United States. Their deaths are usually caused by lung cancer and SIDS.

Second hand smoke facts have shown that exposure to secondhand smoke over time increases the risk for lung cancer by around 20 percent up to 30 percent causing an estimated 3,400 lung cancer deaths annually among adult nonsmokers in the United States.

Exposure to secondhand smoke has immediate harmful effects on the cardiovascular system which increase the risk for heart attack. People who already have heart disease are at high risk.

Researchers have also found that buildings with smoke ventilation systems still have high nicotine levels in the air when smoking is taking place. In the same way they have higher nicotine levels in the air than buildings without ventilation systems.

In the last few years, due to the laws that ban smoking in workplaces and public places, this rule increases the number of households with smoke-free home rules. Therefore, it decreases the adult and youth smoking rates as well as the exposure to secondhand smoke.

Is drinking tea bad for you? | Life and style

Do you fancy a cuppa? We drink, on average, three mugs a day. But you might want to try another tipple after hearing the case of a 47-year-old woman, published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), who developed brittle bones and lost all of her teeth after drinking too much tea.

Tea may not be so great for prostates either. Last year, research from the University of Glasgow found that men who drank more than seven or more cups of tea a day had a 50% higher risk of prostate cancer. And in 2009 a paper in the British Medical Journal showed that drinking very hot tea (70C or more) increased the likelihood of oesophageal cancer.

Still gasping for that cuppa? There is some evidence that tea can be good for you too, with antioxidant properties, so maybe you're not actually drinking enough of the stuff.

The poor woman in the NEJM study is not alone. There are a few other cases of people who have damaged their bones through too much tea. But she (like those in other studies) was drinking excessive amounts: 100-150 tea bags a day to make 12 cups of tea. A litre of tea can contain up to 9mg of fluoride, which in excess can cause skeletal fluorosis, reducing bone quality and causing pain and stiffening of the ligaments. Other studies show you generally need to drink a gallon a day for three decades to develop this condition.

You also shouldn't worry about the Glasgow study as it wasn't designed to show that drinking tea actually caused prostate cancer. All it proved was an association and people were only asked how much tea they drank at the start of the study, which went on for about 28 years.

The National Cancer Institute in the US concludes that the evidence isn't good enough to say tea either harms or helps our health. However it does seem sensible in the light of the BMJ study to wait for your tea to cool down for a few minutes.

Black tea, which makes up 75% of the world's consumption, may have healthy properties from its plant chemicals called polyphenols, which are antioxidants. Green tea contains more polyphenols but isn't so nice to dunk digestives into.

A review of the evidence in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, sponsored by the Tea Council which, the authors say, had no part in the study found the research showed more than three cups of black tea a day reduced heart disease. It found no evidence of harm "in amounts typically consumed". So as long as you drink less than a gallon of tea a day you should be absolutely fine.
